Strive Not To Drive: The Ride of Silence

Strive Not to Drive continues through Friday May 24. The annual event encourages active and sustainable transportation in Asheville and Buncombe County.  Residents are urged to reconsider how they get from place  to place, whether it be by  walking, taking  public transportation, or riding a bicycle.   Part of Strive Not to Drive is The Ride of Silence.  The ride honors those who have been injured or killed while riding a bicycle.

Jean Heushen lives in Naples, Florida.  The native of Belgium has lived in the U.S. thirty years and is an avid cyclist.  He has cycled all over Europe and North America and says he peddles between 7 and 8 thousand miles a year.  This week he rode much of the Blue Ridge Parkway from Virginia to Asheville.  He spoke with David Hurand about his decision to honor the friends he has lost.

Riders are meeting at the Register of Deeds office parking lot across the street from the YMCA.  The Ride of Silence begins at 5:30 pm.
