A recent New York Magazine profile of Marisha Pessl describes a lecture the thirtysomething author gave at Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory four years ago. She quoted an interview with Stan Cordova. The presentation went on. Lots of people quote famous people in lectures, sure-- but Pessl had just cited the work of a character in Night Film, a book she hadn't even published yet.
In July the animal rights group People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals celebrated the transfer of eleven bears from a closed zoo in Cherokee to an animal sanctuary in Texas. Over the next three days David Hurand Speaks with the Principal Chief of the Cherokee Indians about the move, the effects of sequestration on the tribe and the future of the local economy. David spoke with the Chief in his office in Cherokee.
A diverse crowd attended a community forum in Asheville Thursday night entitled After Trayvon Martin. It was the first of what organizers hope will be a series of community discussions involving concerned citizens and law enforcement. David Hurand was there and filed this report.
