Manheimer Big Winner in Asheville Mayoral Primary

Asheville Vice Mayor Esther Manheimer was an easy winner in Tuesday's Mayoral Primary election. Unofficial results show that only 9% of the  city's 67,676 registered voters cast  ballots.

Bringing the bogeyman to life

"This time last year I was plotting to kill a man."

So begins 'Stalking the Bogeyman,' a story written by David Holthouse, originally published in 2004 in The Denver Westword.

Holthouse was just a kid when he was raped by the 17 year-old son of his parents' friends. 

"When I was seven," Holthouse wrote in the article, "I no longer believed in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny or the Tooth Fairy.

"But from that night on, I had no such doubts about the Bogeyman."

'Vicious' isn't your typical superhero story

Victoria Schwab has written several young adult novels, but Vicious is her first book for an adult audience.

While Vicious is a superhero origin story, Schwab’s take is unique, exploring the possibility of magic in an otherwise reality-driven world.

Schwab spoke with WCQS reporter Greta Johnsen before coming to Asheville on her book release tour.

Asheville Mayoral Candidates Meet

Early voting is underway for the October 8th Asheville mayoral primary.  Three names are on the ballot.  Attorney and Vice Mayor  Esther Manheimer,  retired Asheville Risk Manager, John Miall, and waiter and  community activist, Martin Ramsey.  This week the League of Women Voters sponsored a candidates forum at the Chamber of Commerce.   More than 120 people came to hear the candidates declare their positions on issues ranging from taxes and services, economic development,  and affordable housing.   The Forum moderator was David Hurand.  A slightly edited portion of the forum maybe heard b

'A Beautiful Truth' explores human-and ape-nature

Colin McAdam will read from his book Sept. 18 at 7pm at Malaprop's Bookstore in downtown Asheville.

Colin McAdam's book A Beautiful Truth may be a novel, but it's still based on intense research. On a surface level, it tells the stories you've heard about before--- the childless couple who decides to adopt a baby chimpanzee, the devoted scientist who communicates with chimps in labs, the process of studying pharmaceuticals on primates.

Taking The Oath of Citizenship
