Local officials in Buncombe County are scrambling as they consider whether to support the latest North Carolina Department of Transportation plan for the long delayed Interstate 26 Connector. The plan from NCDOT appears to ignore one of the departments primary goals that emerged more than twenty five years ago, separating local traffic over the Bowen Bridge from Interstate 240 traffic. The author of the well-known Bones series has teamed up with her son to write another book in a series of young adult thrillers. "I like to describe us as the #1 mother-son YA thriller forensic science writing team in America,” laughs Brendan Reichs.
Brendan says he and his mother Kathy came up with the idea for Virals series when Kathy saw how many young women would come to readings for the Bones books.
It's a big weekend for fans of film. The Academy Awards ceremony will be broadcast Sunday night. Many of the nominated films are still being screened at area theaters. The Fine Arts Theater has two critically acclaimed films, Omar, and a Japanese animated film, The Wind Rises. Omar is billed as a tense thriller about betrayal, suspected and real, in the Occupied Territories. The Wind Rises is the latest from Director Hayao Miyazaki. It's an animated look at the life of the man who designed Japanese fighter planes during World War II.
The Watauga County School Board is considering removing a book its high school curriculum. 10th graders in an honors English class at Watauga High School are reading Isabel Allende's 1982 book The House of the Spirits. Some parents say the book is inappropriate for their children due to scenes of execution and rape.
The State Chapter of the ACLU has entered the controversy in support of teachers and parents who oppose removing the book from the curriculum. David Hurand spoke with ACLU-NC communications director Mike Meno about the controversy.
