Transmitting to Tomorrow
21st Century Public Radio for Western North Carolina

Goal 3: RENOVATE the WCQS Building

Download the Capital Campaign Brochure (pdf)

The station moved into its historic building during an emergency relocation in 1985. Since then the station has increased services to meet the demands of our growing audience, but studio and office space has not grown or changed to keep up with this expanded service. WCQS purchased its building in 1997. After 2O years, the station's facility needs are clear: safety improvements to meet current building codes, adequate studio, operational and storage space, and additional offices to house current and future staff.

Transmitting to Tomorrow renovations are already transforming the station and our community. Our new sprinkler system has been connected to the city water main. When the concrete was torn up for this installation, new safe sidewalks replaced the deteriorated walk in front of our building. Because of this WCQS initiative, downtown Asheville has been improved for decades to come.

Inside, our renovation will install critical safety features: fire-exit corridors, safe access to our rooftop satellite equipment and basement workshops, as well as complete the installation of our sprinkler system. This will protect the lives of staff and volunteers and safeguard our equipment.

Other renovations will create more ergonomic workspaces to enable staff and volunteers to work more efficiently. Studios will also receive additional soundproofing to allow the production of high-quality professional radio programming.

These renovations will increase the value and desirability of the WCQS building and allow the station to rent out adjoining space at market rates to supplement station income.

The dedicated staff of WCQS have weathered almost two decades in hastily created "temporary" quarters. (This is a photo of the emergency renovation in 1985.) They are eager for a new facility where they can produce their best work for Western North Carolina listeners. These renovations will result in the safe and well-designed facility required for a contemporary public radio station.
